Effects of Cognitive Rehabilitation Programs Offered by Institutions on Cognitive, Depression, and Quality of Life of the Elderly: Based on the Community

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of institutional cognitive rehabilitation programs applied to the elderly in One Sub-area in Gangwon-do and to suggest the need of the tailored intervention program, participants were classified and compared by each classification.

Methods: This study is a descriptive, comparative secondary analysis study based on the results of a quasi-experimental study of single group pre-post design conducted by 7 institutions in a community in Gangwon-do, and 75 elderly people over 65 years of age has completed the assessment. Intervention program was consisted of preparatory activities (attendance and date confirmation, physical activity), main activities (cognitive activity, occupational activity, health education), and finishing activities (sharing impressions, notice of next schedule). To analyze the effectiveness of the program, participants were asked to complete MMSE-DS, SGDS-K, SMCQ, and Korean version of WHOQOL. Paired t-test and effect size were used for data analysis.

Result: After the program was applied, participants¡¯ cognitive function (t = -3.827, p = 0.000) and health-related quality of life (t = -5.090, p = 0.000) were significantly improved and the symptoms of depression (t = 5.509, p = 0.000) and Subjective memory decline (t = 4.965, p = 0.000) decreased significantly. In the group-by-group analysis, differences in effects were identified according to the classification criteria.

Conclusion: Institutional cognitive rehabilitation programs have the effect of improving the cognitive function and health-related quality of life of the elderly in the community and reducing depression and subjective memory decline. Especially, it was found more effective in young-old group, mild cognitive impairment and normal group, and community-dwelling group.
